Things to Do in Geelong — and the Pubs Next Door

Geelong's best sights are close together: the waterfront, the Little Malop Street arts precinct and the stadium are all walkable from the CBD. Here is what to see, and which pub to finish at for each one

Quick answer: Start on the waterfront — Cunningham Pier, the painted bollards, the carousel and Eastern Beach in one flat walk — then head up to Little Malop Street for Geelong Arts Centre and Geelong Gallery. Add the National Wool Museum, a Cats game at GMHBA Stadium or an afternoon on Pakington Street, and use Geelong as your base for the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. Every stop below lists the pubs within walking distance.

This species is found at the eastern limit of its range there, where it produces a call likened to the squeaking of an un-greased cart wheel.

What to See, and Where to Drink After

The Waterfront & Eastern Beach

Cunningham Pier to Eastern Beach, Corio Bay

The foreshore is the part of Geelong every visitor remembers. A flat promenade runs from Cunningham Pier past the painted bollards — wooden figures from the city's history lined along the sea wall — and the restored carousel in its pavilion, to the art-deco swimming enclosure at Eastern Beach. Allow 45 minutes for the walk at an easy pace, longer if you stop for photos or a swim in summer.

Pubs nearby: Sailors' Rest and Edge Geelong both sit on the water, and Pier Hotel is in the same precinct. Waterfront bars guide →

Free to walk Family-friendly Bay views

Geelong Arts Centre (GPAC)

50 Little Malop St, Geelong CBD

Geelong's main performing arts venue — still called GPAC by most locals — hosts touring theatre, comedy, music and orchestral programming across several stages, including Costa Hall and the Playhouse. Check what's on before you plan your visit; a show turns a day trip into an evening out.

Pubs nearby: The Arborist is directly opposite, with Non Disclosure and The 18th Amendment on the same street. Pre-show drinks near GPAC →

Theatre & live shows Cocktail bars on the block

Geelong Gallery

Little Malop St, beside Johnstone Park

One of Victoria's oldest regional galleries, with a collection spanning colonial Australian painting through to contemporary work, plus a changing program of exhibitions. It shares the Little Malop Street arts precinct with GPAC and the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, so the three make an easy half-day together.

Pubs nearby: The Arborist for lunch, or FarmDog Brewing on Little Malop for a local beer. All Geelong CBD pubs →

Arts precinct Rainy-day option

National Wool Museum

Moorabool St, Geelong CBD

Housed in a historic bluestone wool store, the museum tells the story of the industry that built Geelong — from sheep station to mill floor — with working machinery and changing exhibitions. It's a short walk up from the waterfront, so it slots neatly between the foreshore and lunch.

Pubs nearby: The National Hotel is on Moorabool Street, and Elephant & Castle is close by. Heritage pubs guide →

Local history Rainy-day option

AFL at GMHBA Stadium

Kardinia Park, South Geelong

Home of the Geelong Cats. A home game at Kardinia Park is the most Geelong afternoon there is — the stadium sits on the edge of the CBD and the walk in from the pubs is part of the ritual. Outside the AFL season the stadium also hosts other sport and major events.

Pubs nearby: Barwon Club and Valley Inn are the game-day regulars. Pubs near GMHBA Stadium →

Game day Walk from the CBD

Pakington Street, Geelong West

"Pako", Geelong West

Geelong West's main street is lined with cafes, independent shops, restaurants and some of the city's best-loved pubs. It's the place for a long lunch or a slow Saturday afternoon, and it has the densest cluster of pubs on this site.

Pubs nearby: Queen of the West, Petrel Hotel and The Yardz, among others. All Geelong West pubs →

Cafes & shopping Pub crawl territory

Geelong Botanic Gardens

Eastern Park, East Geelong

Established in the 1850s, the gardens sit in Eastern Park on the hill above the bay, at the far end of the foreshore walk. Combine them with Eastern Beach for a quieter half-day away from the CBD.

Pubs nearby: walk back down to Edge Geelong at Eastern Beach. Family-friendly pubs →

Day Trips from Geelong

Geelong sits between two of Victoria's best coastal regions. Both are an easy drive, and each has its own pub guide on this site.

The Bellarine Peninsula

Wineries, beaches and heritage towns east of Geelong — Queenscliff's Victorian-era streetscape and fort, Portarlington's pier, and the surf at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. The Portarlington ferry runs from Cunningham Pier, so you can make a day of it without a car. Bellarine Peninsula pubs →  ·  Bellarine weekend pub trail →

The Surf Coast & Great Ocean Road

Torquay is the start of the Great Ocean Road and home to Bells Beach. From there the road runs west through Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne, each with a pub worth stopping at. Surf Coast pubs →  ·  Great Ocean Road pub trail →
