About South Geelong
South Geelong sits just south of the CBD, straddling Moorabool St between the city centre and the Barwon River. It's an established working-class suburb with a strong local identity, anchored by the Barwon Club Hotel — one of Geelong's most beloved live music venues and a pub institution since 1859. Close to South Geelong train station, it's easily accessible from across the city and a natural stop for anyone who loves live gigs and a no-fuss parmi.
Barwon Club Hotel
Geelong's home of live music since 1859. Two iconic rooms — The Bandroom and The Barn — host touring bands, DJ nights and Monday Parmi Night ($22).
Valley Inn Hotel
A classic South Geelong sports pub with an impressive alfresco area, state-of-the-art sports bar and Carlton Draught Tank Beer stored in copper tanks. Free parking, open daily from 10am.
Little Creatures Brewery Geelong
The iconic Little Creatures brewery in a converted wool store on Swanston St — fresh-brewed ales and lagers on tap, plus a full food menu, beer garden and live music events. Open 7 days.
Two stations, one suburb — V/Line straight to the Barwon Club
South Geelong is the only inner-city suburb with its own V/Line stop. South Geelong Station sits one stop past the central terminus on the Warrnambool line — a four-minute walk to the Barwon Club Hotel on Moorabool Street, which is the South Geelong anchor in our Pubs Near Geelong Train Station guide. From the central Geelong Station the walk is 15 minutes — still tight enough to handle a Cats game day (Barwon Club is 500m from GMHBA Stadium and runs Bandroom live music Fri/Sat into 1am, which is the right side of the last V/Line back to Melbourne). For a V/Line evening that wants live music rather than rooftop drinks, this is the South Geelong move.
