Victoria's mussel capital — bayside town on the northern tip of the Bellarine Peninsula

About Portarlington

Portarlington sits on the northern tip of the Bellarine Peninsula, where the bay curves west toward Geelong — about 36km south-east of the CBD and a 40-minute drive via the Bellarine Highway. It's a small town (under 4,000 residents) that earns outsized attention for two things: its mussel farms — Portarlington is consistently cited as Victoria's mussel capital, producing the bulk of the state's commercial crop — and the Portarlington–Geelong ferry, which runs a 55-minute bay crossing as an alternative to driving. The Searoad Ferries passenger service makes Portarlington an easy day trip without touching the highway.

The foreshore is the centre of outdoor life: a long grassed esplanade, a jetty popular with anglers, and a boat ramp used by weekend sailors. For visitors doing a full Bellarine Peninsula loop, Portarlington is the northern point before dropping south toward Queenscliff (20km), Ocean Grove (30km) and Barwon Heads (35km). The town is quieter than Ocean Grove and less polished than Queenscliff — which is exactly what makes it worth the detour.
